Saddles: There is so much to do today about saddles. I have to tell you when I went to Portugal at first I was amazed that all of the horses that were brought into the arena of all different sizes and mixed breeds were ridden with no concern for which saddle from the selected bunch in the tack room went on them.

I was amazed, no sore backs etc., and all the things you hear now to keep people buying saddles. It was explained to me that it was more important that the saddle had the old flat panel shape and that spread out to fit a variety of horses and caused far less problems than the large puffy rounded panels seen on modern saddles.

I can also tell you I don’t like treeless saddles. In many cases they put all of the weight of the rider in one spot since there is nothing to spread it out on the horse. So, as time goes by the horse gets more and more sore and more and more rank, especially in the canter. Trees have been used for centuries for a reason. It spreads the weight over the horse’s back. The idea of a treeless saddle was tried hundreds of years ago and abandoned. Even now many makers are going to a so-called partial-treed saddle (back to the tree in other words) as they are finding the support is needed by horse and rider.  So you don’t feel like your sitting on a bare back pad with your legs sticking out!

Here at the school I have never had a horse with a sore back, a horse that could not raise the back or have any saddle issues (as so many claim to have) and have been using the Zaldi Lusitanus for years. The saddle has been used in hundreds and hundreds of lessons, and all the riders love it at once. Many of my students have sold their $4,000 famous-name dressage saddles as soon as they have ridden in the Zaldi Lusitanus.  It has been on Paso Finos to Friesians. As a matter of fact, a student bought my wife's Zaldi Lusitanus saddle for her Friesian. No other saddle had worked on him, treeless and all, and at once all of his problems stopped after using it.

At the school in Portugal the Zaldi Lusitanus also became a favorite of all the riders once it came out, as it was copied from the Portuguese school’s work saddles and then refined.

Zaldi, a leading European saddle manufacturer, has been constructing, designing and improving saddles for four generations. Zaldi uses scientific research combined with skill, quality, and commitment to artistry. These beautifully designed riding saddles have real wool flocked panels with a double layer latex rubber padded deep seat constructed on a special ZALDI tree which incorporates total strength, flexibility and lightness---and are fully guaranteed. The leather is carefully selected European box-calf and is available in a good selection of sizes and several color combinations.

By the way, the large square flap is much better for the leg of the rider as when you put it back, say on a passage etc. it does not get soiled by the horse’s sweat. To me it looks far more elegant.

The regular model, Zaldi Lusitanus, does not have the great soft leather of the Luso Deluxe model. So, if you can afford it, get the better one. But if not, the Zaldi Lusitanus is also great. In my opinion it is far better than the current crop of expensive, take you to the poor house, dressage saddles that cost as much as a used car.  A student who just purchased the Luso Deluxe showed it to a local tack store owner who thought the price was at least $4,400 plus.

The prices are listed in US dollars. The listed price will fluctuate a bit based on the Euro. The customer will also pay for all shipping and associated costs to import the saddle from Spain. Figure on another $250 or so for reasonably, fast service and crating. Still, the prices we offer students are the lowest in the industry that I am aware of. If other Zaldi models are desired email me for the price.
